Five Eye-Opening Facts About Our Bloated Post-9/11 'Defense' Spending | | AlterNet

I'm not one of those liberals who say that we should gut the Pentagon budget. I want us to spend enough to be able to defend ourselves and beat anything we have to beat (emphasis on the HAVE TO!) But our military budget has always been stupidly designed and stupidly administered (to the point that retiring President Eisenhower (retired GENERAL Eisenhower) warned us about it.)
We need to have some serious policy debates about what we want from the military and some serious oversight as to how it gets done. Just by eliminating the waste in the military budget (talk about your Cadillac welfare queens!) we could fund most of what we've had to cut over the last few years and then move on to rebalancing the tax system and paying for some of the things we really need (education and universal healthcare, anyone?)

House votes for middle class tax cuts MINUS the Reichpublicans

Well, well. Nancy pushed and forced the Reichpublicans to come out foursquare against the middle class in favor of their masters. Glad to see SOMEONE in Congress (on our side, anyway) has some balls.

Separate Church and State... with a Crowbar

We need to yank the tax exemption from every church that has ever, once, opened its mouth on any, one, political topic. And if I had my way, we'd make it retroactive to the sixties, levy interest and penalties and give them 30 days to pay or we seize everything. Then sell their property to casinos, pimps, and gay activist groups :) That'll teach em! :)

GO VOTE!

One of the things I feel most strongly about in the maelstrom that is our tax system is that the upper limit of SS taxable income should be repealed. It's a tax, not an investment, so limiting the tax on high income earners is both unfair (proportionally) and stupid (let's help finance the damn thing!) If you agree, and I KNOW you do!!!, go and vote at Obama's Citizens' Briefing Book site. And then go through it and vote for other issues that fire you up.

Exactly

Kevin is talking today about hedge funds, taxes, and loopholes. Good post. But I think he hits the milieu de la moment on the head here:

This is an absurd loophole, and Congress is now dithering about whether to close it. (The fact that they're dithering, instead of competing with each other to express outrage and then closing it immediately on a unanimous vote, is yet another demonstration of the immense stranglehold that the rich have on American politics right now, but that's another story.) However, David Cay Johnston tells us today that even if this loophole gets closed, there's another one waiting in the wings.
