"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead (Mostly what other say will be in italics, what I say will not. There will be occasions when this is messed up or forgotten, but generally it will true- for those keeping track of the opining vs the reporting!)

Time for a Coup?
It's certainly to overthrow and get rid of the conservative morons in the country. Just unbelievable.

Bill Safire Dead
Former Nixonite and NYT Columnist William Safire has died of pancreatic cancer. Usually, I'm not that moved when conservatives dies, but Safire was not a totally unrepetant fascist as so many of his comperes are. He was also, to my pleasure and his credit, a word freak. His books and columns on words and linquistics were a pleasure to read and usually made one smile and think, even if he was being overly pedantic at the time. He will be missed.

Death by Official Murder
The Willingham case has been making news recently due to some nasty scientific dismantling of the fallacious, if not fraudulent, expert testimony involved in the case (suffice to say the infamous Dr 'Death' James Grigson was an e.w.) The New Yorker has an excellent (if LOOOOONG) article on it.
It's one of the reasons I can't laugh at Ron White's routine about the death penalty in Texas. "Some states are getting rid of the death penalty; my state's putting in an express lane." Well, there are reasons not to rush these things.

Go Waxman!
Rep Henry Waxman (one of the few really good guys, even if he looks like a psychotic accountant) has announced his support for net neutrality. Big plus!
HOLY CRAP!
This is unbelievable. In a decade, the only groups to show ANY income gains are the ones where the majority of their income is supplied by the government?!?!?! Just wow! I knew this decade had sucked for me, but apparently I was a lot less alone than I thought!!!!

Computer Progenitor 'Rehabilitated' in UK
A half century late, but good news anyway. Gordon Brown apologizes for Britain's deplorable treatment of Alan Turing after the war. Turning, essentially the father of the computer AND the man who cracked the Enigma code, easing, if not, enabling, the Allied victory in Europe in WWII, was tried, convicted, and chemically castrated for the crime of being gay in the aftermath of the war (and I thought it was tough growing up in Texas!!!!) Shortly after this charming sequence of events, he killed himself.
Gordon Brown writes an apology in the Telegraph. Not enough, but I guess it'll have to do.

No one should die because they cannot afford healthcare. No one should go broke because they get sick, and no one should be tied to a job because of pre-existing condition. If you agree, please post this as your status for the rest of the day.
