Bad Day for Icons of the 60's/70's

Former Senator and perennial Presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy died today, as well. His presence in the '68 Democratic race, and his outspoken opposition to the war in Viet Nam, basically drove LBJ out of the race, and the White House.

Former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., who ran for vice president in 2004, said McCarthy "was a remarkable American, a man who spoke his conscience, and he was a great leader for my party."
