"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead (Mostly what other say will be in italics, what I say will not. There will be occasions when this is messed up or forgotten, but generally it will true- for those keeping track of the opining vs the reporting!)

Brief Rant About the Press
Argh! The MSM having blown the 'call' in NH is now blaming NH voters for being racist. It couldnt have anything to do with crappy polling or analysis. Nope, had to be those racist abolitionists in funny rural clothes. Or maybe it had to with the fact that almost every poll showed a HUGE count (I forget the numbers, but it was in the 20 percent range) of undecideds. Or the wall to wall Hillary bashing in the media (personally, I blame the arch-asshole Chris Matthews for putting her over the top... take the red pill, Chris!) that may have pushed female voters to vote for Hillary just to see CM cry on MSNBC.

Top Ten Legal Whoppers
Steve Benen, subbing for Kevin over at Political Animal, points us Dahlia Litwick's top 10 list of Bu$hCo's most egregious legal lies of the year. Solon weeps.....

Breathe Deep the Gathering Gloom
EPA denies CA's request for waiver to allow stiffer than federal pollution regs. Schwarzenegger vows to sue Feds. Hold your breath for a while.

We're Getting Hosed
The result of the mass-ification of the media is readily apparent today. With the tapes destruction cover up scandal unfolding, the ongoing telecom immunity scandal heating up, and several dozen other issues/scandals (aren't all issues ultimately scandals with Bu$hCo?) floating around, what's the lead story each hour of the thirteen Eyewitless local news broadcasts? JAMIE LYNN SPEARS IS PREGNANT! NATION DOOMED! Look, it's a NEW bright shiny object to distract the masses from what's really important.

How do they explain this?

Syria-Israel Dustup
Kevin posts today on the confusion surrounding the recent Israeli attack on something in Syria. He points to an article in today's WaPo, which I hadn't seen yet. Read Kevin then the WaPo article, and while you still may not KNOW what happened, you'll know more than you know now. Which is better than knowing less, which seems to be the state of things these Bushie days.
UPDATE: Froomkin weighs in in a lengthy posting today.

More "All Hat, No Cattle"
Not only does Bush not have cattle on his Crawford estate...er ranch, he has no horses, either. According to former Mexican Prez, Vincente Fox, this is because big old Westport-Connecticut-rancher W is AFRAID of horses. Big bad Cowboy George is a litle ole girly-man!

More Lies and Lying Liars
Sigh! Thanks, Josh... it is gnawing at me.
Googling bush +9/11 +saddam shows nothing at all, Tony. Well, except 2+million hits..... so you're right, the President NEVER EVER tried to link Saddam to 9/11.

Kiss the Truth Goodbye
The Wall Street Journal has been bad enough lately (well, in my adulthood anyway, which stretches back a good three plus decades) with its uber-libertarian, conservo-reactionary tilt (is one tilting if one is lying on one's right side?), but the news portion of the paper has been relatively straightforward. That may be about to change. Apparently, the Bancrofts are preparing to accept NewsCorp's offer. Murdoch will rule the WSJ (think the NY Post with social acceptability.....) We're all doomed!

You Only Live Twice
(or perhaps, Die Another Day?)
The Coalition of the Billing had retract the announcement that it had killed a 'key' Al Qaeda figure when it was pointed out that they had already trumpeted his death a year ago. Apparently, the military is taking notes from Halliburton and has adopted double billing?

Line of the Day
From Josh's great discussion of the brouhaha over Reid calling Pace incompetent (and the 'similar' non-brouhaha over McCain saying much the same to/of Casey):
Some principles are clear and worth repeating: You can't have a war for democracy fought by people whose principles are authoritarian and anti-democratic. It's not a throwaway line or a barb. It's the only pivot around which to understand the Bush years.

Gonzo Is Toast, Part II
They've got him. He committed perjury. He claims Lam was advised on the immigration enforcement excuse/ruse; multiple instances of other sworn testimony and documents indicate that is false.
TPM has great coverage, including the best line of the day:
But he makes the key point in the same post:

From the buzz I'm hearing toay, if Alberto Gonzales were a stock, we'd be at that point when those automatic trading halts kicked in because so many people are trying to sell.
But he makes the key point in the same post:
But let's not get distracted by Alberto Gonzales. He's just a cog. In almost every case, what we're talking about here is Gonzales's willingness to take orders from the White House -- most importantly from Karl Rove and President Bush -- on firing US Attorneys for corrupt purposes and using the Justice Department to suppress Democratic turnout in swing states. Mr. Gonzales is a secondary issue. The real players are in the White House.
