This is insane. Of course, the whole privatization push is insane. How anyone expects taking a non-profit public function, adding a profit layer, and providing the service for LESS money to actually work is beyond me. All one has to do is look at healthcare. What is the lowest cost of administration healthcare service? Medicare, by orders of magnitude.
And most government services are government services for the clear and simple reason that they need to be run for a large mass of people at all times whether or not they make a profit. The few services that, in the past, were parcelled out to private entities, or allowed to remain private, were all regulated and treated as utilities.
I wish to hell someone had blown the Chicago School of Business off the face of the earth about 30-40 years ago (preferably while St Ronny was visiting) :) This whole business good/government evil thing might have been nipped in the bud before America turned into Thailand East.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead (Mostly what other say will be in italics, what I say will not. There will be occasions when this is messed up or forgotten, but generally it will true- for those keeping track of the opining vs the reporting!)

Citizen Jane Explains the Impact of Citizens United
Good quick history lesson on what happened and why it's important to de-personify the corporations. Mildly amusing (you'd think with the money and talent available, PFAW could have risen to at least the Conjunction Junction level) :)
TruthOut: Wal-Mart Is Not A Person
We need the de-personification of corporations, and we need it in a hurry. But with the Reagan-Bush Supreme Court, that's unlikely to happen in our lifetimes, which, as a result, are likely to be poor, nasty, brutish, and short.
