Five Eye-Opening Facts About Our Bloated Post-9/11 'Defense' Spending | | AlterNet

I'm not one of those liberals who say that we should gut the Pentagon budget. I want us to spend enough to be able to defend ourselves and beat anything we have to beat (emphasis on the HAVE TO!) But our military budget has always been stupidly designed and stupidly administered (to the point that retiring President Eisenhower (retired GENERAL Eisenhower) warned us about it.)
We need to have some serious policy debates about what we want from the military and some serious oversight as to how it gets done. Just by eliminating the waste in the military budget (talk about your Cadillac welfare queens!) we could fund most of what we've had to cut over the last few years and then move on to rebalancing the tax system and paying for some of the things we really need (education and universal healthcare, anyone?)

with shiny objects. If I had to guess, I'd say Boehner & Co. will
stay the course with this strategy, and count on confused Tea Partiers
being easily misled, but it won't be easy...."

Wanna Balance the Budget?

The budget shortfall this year has been estimated at $250b. According to this:

War funding, which averaged about $93 billion a year from 2003 through 2005, rose to $120 billion in 2006 and $171 billion in 2007 and President George W. Bush has asked for $193 billion in 2008...

It would be a start.....
