All Hell About to Break Loose

It looks like the erupting scandal regarding the CIA (et al) not notifying Congress about programs is coalescing around one specific program. No details as yet, but it doesn't look good (altho it does not look like it's the purported Cheney assassination squad(s).

Lots of info on all the sites listed to the right (particularly FDL.) Additionally, Ambinder opines and Marcy covers. Memorize the terms PSP and President's Surveillance Program. You'll hear them a lot.

'Special' Prosecutor for CIA Tapes Mess?

AG Mukasey has appointed an 'outside' prosecutor to investigate the destruction of the CIA torture tapes. Just how independent he'll be is open to debate, but given posts on TPM today, it sounds like he'll be somewhere between a Bu$hCo lapdog and Patrick Fitzgerald. Either way, it's a start.

What Bush Has Done To America

Being the sort of person I am, I always pretty much assume that if someone in government has moving lips, it means they're lying. But, until Bu$hCo, I always assumed that they were at least trying to make it LOOK like they weren't lying. The last seven years have removed even that. Steve Benen, writing at TPM, sums it up perfectly:

And speaking of not telling the truth, the White House emphasized yesterday that Bush has "no recollection" of being made aware of the tapes' destruction before Thursday, when CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden briefed the president.

Given the quality and reliability of White House denials of late, I'm inclined to assume this means the president keeps a DVD copy of the video in his desk drawer and has held multiple screenings of the interrogations in the White House screening room.

Or maybe I'm just cynical.

No Way This Ends Well....

The CIA has started eating its own in public. CIA IG John Helgerson, long a controversial figure at the CIA, is being investigated by CIA chief Michael "I am NOT Himmler" Hayden, for overstepping his authority and not being "impartial" (read not toeing the line). Someone call me when the last human is forced out of DC and nothing but vampires and undead are left.
