Alabama Latinos Flee Immigration Law, Leaving Insufficient Workforce for Tuscaloosa Tornado Cleanup | AlterNet

This follows on the same situation in Georgia, where an absurd (and probably illegal) immigration law has disrupted (MASSIVELY) the ag business, particularly the early harvest. It's one thing for Alabama cleanup efforts to be messed up (will anyone really be able to tell if Tuscaloosa gets repaired or not?), but goddammit, I NEED my Visalia onions!!!!! :)

From My Cold, Dead Hands.... or Some Such Crap

We can apparently take all their other constitutional rights, but the Second Amendment is as holy today as when Jesus first handed it to George Washington with the other Comamendments at Mt Sinusitis!

U.S. Jews Not Able To Fly On Delta Flights To Saudi Arabia

I cant imagine any way this is legal but I also cant imagine any way the Roberts' Court doesnt let them get away with it. They are a corporation after all, so their rights count more than an individual's.

Can We Finally Put A Stop to this Lie?

The fact that David Brooks espouses it pretty much guarantees it's both false and stupid and the facts on the ground show that, indeed, it is both.

Political Animal - CIA vet: Bush White House targeted blogging critic

"Now, I suspect some folks might hear this and think, “C’mon. Bush, Cheney, Rove, and their team were awful, but they weren’t this awful.

Except, they were."

Anthony Weiner, Anti-Hero | Talking Points Memo

As usual, Josh adds some thoughtfulness to a debate that's really about nothing. It matters not a whit in the on-going battle to save the America we grew up in from becoming the corporatist state that the Kochs and their big money brethren want it to be. Weiner was a great voice in that struggle, and THAT is what matters; not who showed what to whom. I still think he should resign and stand for election; I bet he'd win.

Bye Bye, Newtie

I get the feeling we're missing a piece here. This was a 'long-planned' trip, so it can't have come as a surprise. So why wait until he actually hits the trip to quit if it's so offensive? Something is missing.

Iz are chiddren lernin?

Our schools may need help, but blowing them up, teaching kids the world is 6000 years old, and that Paul Revere warned the British to keep their limey hands off our semi-automatic muskets is NOT the way to go!

Pens Not Swords?

If, indeed, government spending in a recession is the right thing to do, and most non-ideological economists agree it is, we could spend about the amount of one month of the wars in the Middle East and balance all the state budgets for the year. Seems to me this would be a much a better use of the funds, and even if we have to put it on the tab, the economic (and psychic) benefits would be more than worth the additional interest in the long run.

UK austerity economy "not working"

Gee! Cutting spending in the middle of a recession and the economy isn't responding? Wow! How unusual! How odd. How... what's the word I'm looking for.... oh yeah, TEXTBOOK!

Five Eye-Opening Facts About Our Bloated Post-9/11 'Defense' Spending | | AlterNet

I'm not one of those liberals who say that we should gut the Pentagon budget. I want us to spend enough to be able to defend ourselves and beat anything we have to beat (emphasis on the HAVE TO!) But our military budget has always been stupidly designed and stupidly administered (to the point that retiring President Eisenhower (retired GENERAL Eisenhower) warned us about it.)
We need to have some serious policy debates about what we want from the military and some serious oversight as to how it gets done. Just by eliminating the waste in the military budget (talk about your Cadillac welfare queens!) we could fund most of what we've had to cut over the last few years and then move on to rebalancing the tax system and paying for some of the things we really need (education and universal healthcare, anyone?)

Voter Fraud Laws and Voter ID

Andy brings up an important point but doesn't run with it. Think of all the recent voter 'fraud' cases. Most turned out to be nothing, but the majority that were either Repugs lying about their precincts for whatever purpose or Repug hired contractors faking signatures on proposition or const. amendment petitions. There aren't hordes of un-ID-ed people storming the precincts to vote for Dems, but to the Repugs, any vote for the Dems is suspect. :)

Debunking the myth of Prop.13 - latimes.com

I'm glad to see anything approaching a public debate on undoing Prop 13, however preliminary and nascent. This abortion of the early Reagan movement has destroyed the tax bases of most cities and completely changed the face of California by forcing cities to favor commercial development (sales taxes) vs residential (property taxes). How many mini-malls were there in CA before Prop 13? Hell, there are two in my driveway right now! :)
