There is almost no chance this Congress will pass this bill, but it’s important that Democrats – and others who care about safeguarding the opportunity to earn a living wage in America – call attention to the inequality that increasingly characterizes the nation, and has been institutionalized by a conservative political agenda.

The National Memo » Who Are We Leaving Behind In Afghanistan?

The idea that a true soldier never leaves a comrade behind is chiseled into U.S. military creed.

This heroic duty has been celebrated in story and film, and recorded in numerous battlefield citations. But does it extend to foreign allies who, though not exactly fellow soldiers, are crucial collaborators in our military missions? Specifically, what loyalty do we owe to interpreters, the people who have kept our troops safe with their language skills, their deft understanding of culture, and often with their bravery as they walked side by side with American soldiers?

Apparently, their safety and well-being are not so highly valued.

Arizona, much of which receives more than 300 days a year of sunshine, should be the poster child for a thriving solar industry. Today, the state is the second fastest growing when it comes to solar: more than 500 homes a month add a rooftop photovoltaic unit, and the industry employs around 10,000 people statewide. It's been an ongoing struggle for solar power, since developers, competing energy suppliers and elected officials keep erecting obstacles. Until recently, for example, some homeowners associations and municipalities outlawed rooftop models, arguing that the solar panels disturb the homogenous horizons of red-tile roofs...

Daily Kos: The revenge of the insurance industry

Daily Kos: The revenge of the insurance industry

President Obama on Thursday apologized to Americans whose existing health insurance was being significantly altered or cancelled altogether just as enrollment for the Affordable Care Act was commencing. "I am sorry," the President announced, "that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me."

But those Americans waiting for a mea culpa from either their employers or their insurers shouldn't hold their breath. After all, while their premiums and deductibles have spiraled upwards, the percentage of nonelderly Americans covered by workplace insurance has plummeted from almost 70 percent to 54 percent just since 2001. Meanwhile, even as the evidence is growing that some carriers are cynically using the launch of the ACA to squeeze or drop less "desirable" customers, the Obama administration like the Bush White House before it has had to plead with insurers to protect their current policyholders.

Daily Kos: Major New Development Could Swing VA AG Race to (D) UPDATE X3

Ballot revisions for the Virginia AG race between Republican Mark Obenshain and Democrat Mark Herring have been coming fast and furious over the last couple of days, but they've done little to dent Obenshain's initial margin. Currently, the vote count remains in Obenshain's favor by 777 votes.

Provisional ballots still need to be counted, but most observers believe that there aren't nearly enough provisionals to give Herring a chance of overcoming a nearly 800 vote lead. Essentially, Herring needed a miracle to pull off the win.

Well, that miracle appears to have arrived in the form of a vote-losing clusterfuck. Due to some great digging by Dave Wasserman (Cook Political Report), it appears that election officials have acknowledged some huge irregularities with respect to counting of absentee ballots in Fairfax county that, if borne out, likely swings the race to the Democrats. Follow me below for the details...

This morning, the DC Circuit ruled in favor of a challenge against the constitutionality of the ACA contraceptive mandate, finding that it would violate the religious free exercise rights of the Catholic co-owners of a pair of small for-profit food processing companies to force their companies to pay for such coverage. While the Court decided that the companies themselves had no free exercise rights as "persons" under the Constitution or the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, their owners could seek to vindicate those rights given the closely held nature of their ownership. The Court further determined that the reasons behind the contraceptive mandate were insufficiently compelling to override the owners' First Amendment rights.

The Benghazi Report Questions CBS Still Hasn't Answered | Blog | Media Matters for America

CBS News has finally offered more than a blanket statement in support of their controversial report on the September 2012 attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya. But the network has yet to grapple with the pressing questions surrounding their reporting.

Daily Kos: Obamacare 'rate shock' victim changes her mind, calls the law a 'blessing in disguise'

Dianne Barrette, the 57-year-old Florida realtor who was paying $54 a month for a Blue Cross insurance plan that got cancelled quickly became the poster person for the "Obamacare is taking my insurance away!" campaign after CBS News ran her story, and almost just as quickly became the face of debunked Obamacare stories when Fox News' (!!!) Greta Van Susteren poked it full of holes. It's been a useful story for plenty of journalists—Erik Wemple of the Washington Post, and Nancy Metcalf of Consumer Reports—to explore what's really going on with Obamacare, "rate shock," and people losing their junk insurance.

The National Memo » GOP ‘Civil War’ Pits Right Wing Against Right Wing In Alabama Special Election

In the contentious special election for the U.S. House seat in Alabama’s 1st congressional district, an almost ubiquitous narrative has taken hold within the political media: that the campaign pits an “establishment Republican” — former State Senator Bradley Byrne — against a “Tea Party insurgent,” right-wing activist Dean Young. That framework, which has provided a convenient template for countless reports on the Republican Party “civil war,” overlooks one important factor: Byrne is just as far outside of the mainstream as his more-outspoken opponent.

Cuccinelli Fundraising Hampered By 'Sense Of Entitlement,' GOP Consultant Says

Democrat Terry McAuliffe was always going to raise a lot of money in his bid to be governor of Virginia.

But GOP candidate Ken Cuccinelli never took fundraising as seriously as he should have, despite knowing that McAuliffe's past career as a Democratic fundraiser for the Clintons would give him an automatic leg up, according to a Republican consultant.

Cuccinelli has paid the price.

How the Super-Rich Are Abandoning America | Common Dreams

As they accumulate more and more wealth, the very rich have less need for society. At the same time, they've convinced themselves that they made it on their own, and that contributing to societal needs is unfair to them. There is ample evidence that this small group of takers is giving up on the country that made it possible for them to build huge fortunes.

Special Investigation: How Insurers Are Hiding Obamacare Benefits From Customers

Donna received the letter canceling her insurance plan on Sept. 16. Her insurance company, LifeWise of Washington, told her that they'd identified a new plan for her. If she did nothing, she'd be covered.

A 56-year-old Seattle resident with a 57-year-old husband and 15-year-old daughter, Donna had been looking forward to the savings that the Affordable Care Act had to offer.

But that's not what she found. Instead, she'd be paying an additional $300 a month for coverage. The letter made no mention of the health insurance marketplace that would soon open in Washington, where she could shop for competitive plans, and only an oblique reference to financial help that she might qualify for, if she made the effort to call and find out...

Pay No Attention to That Imperialist Behind the Curtain | Robert Scheer

What John Kerry did this week in Egypt and Saudi Arabia is nothing short of despicable. He, and the president who appointed him, managed to honor both a vicious military dictatorship and a totalitarian medieval monarchy as examples of progress toward a more democratic Middle East, as if neither stood in contradiction to professed U.S. objectives for the region.
