In Shift, Feds Target Top Execs For Health Fraud

While possibly unfair to the peripherally involved, this is a positive step. We need to make it EXPENSIVE for companies that violate the law, particular those that do it knowingly and willingly (in some cases, joyfully!) At some point, we need to break a big company and put it out of business. Until the execs, and particularly, the shareholders, feel the pain, nothing will change. If your wildman executive team could wipe out your investment, you're a lot more likely to hold them a lot more accountable.

Republicans Plan To Pay Off The Deficit By Literally Selling America

And... proof that the American electorate is crazy:
"Despite refusing to elaborate on their plan to accomplish the campaign promises, voters swept Republicans into power in the House and many governor’s mansions and state legislatures with high hopes the GOP was telling the truth for once and would begin serious legislation on the first day in session."

Caring and Not Caring

Great analysis of the major weakness of the Repugs. They don't care, and people realize they don't care, and while the people used not to care, now they're starting to care. Don't care? The Repugs better care, or they can kiss it all goodbye. Take care! ;)

Karma on the Glacial Time Scale

At the rate we're going, we're going to need a revolution on the order of the FDR period AGAIN! Sigh, why do we have to keep going backwards in order to move forward again. The uberrich will win in the short run, but progress ALWAYS steamrollers those who get in the way. Just not in any reliable time-frame; sort of like karma- it always works, just not in the moment we'd like it to :)

Utah GOP Makes Gold and Silver Coins Legal Currency | AlterNet

I firmly believe that everyone should have some gold in their portfolio, both as as investment (mostly as 'insurance') and as a disaster cache (sort of immediate insurance.) I'm also avidly opposed to any attempt to reinstitute the gold standard; the economy is so large and complex, that tying it to a specific 'specie' is a) impossible and b) would trigger an economic collapse that only owning gold would save one from. Guess who owns gold and is backing the gold standard? They aren't your friends!

1967 Borders Brouhaha

I've moved over the years from rabid (rabbi'd?) Zionism to sort of tepid support to nihilistic apathy, but I think the opprobrium heaped on Obama for his 67 Borders comments is stupid. It may not be the ideal solution, it may not be a good solution, at all, but it's not the naive insanity it's been described.

Focus on the Family CEO Admits: "We're Losing" on Gay Marriage | AlterNet

I HATE these smug bastards (almost as much as the Family Research Council) and it's LOVELY to see them riddled with the sweet stench of failure and self-doubt. It's particularly sweet seeing it in those who never doubted before.

How Republicans Are Convincing Themselves That A Debt Default Wouldn't Be So Bad -- And Why They're Wrong | TPMDC

I'm not accusing Druckenmiller of anything, I have a lot of respect for him (other than this moronic position), but I'm willing to bet that while he's saying this, he's ready to go MASSIVELY short if it even starts to look like there's a possibility that someone might suggest that Congress might even THINK (seriously, not bloviatingly) about defaulting. Given the requirements of the ratings agency to rerate on default, and the inability of many funds to hold any defaultee, the system would blow up.

Daily Kos: Rick Perry becomes latest name floated as 2012 savior for Republican Party

Great Article

We apply voucher logic to literally no other service provided by government, and for good reason. Public services are dependent on shared access, shared costs, and shared accountability. If the public pays for a service, it has the right to run the service and the responsibility to provide oversight for it. If you don’t like that dynamic, you are essentially objecting to the very idea of taxation and democratic government.

Why Conservatives Want to Destroy Public Education | AlterNet

Time Warner Is a Bunch of Idiots

We have Time Warner Cable (cuz it's the local monopoly) and have been generally pleased with it. But over the weekend, we tried to add their sports package to our setup, using the online setup. Everything went fine but the channels never became available. So, finally, this morning we called TWC to find out what was up.

Well, the order has been cancelled, we're told. Why? UMMMMMMMM we don'tknow, they say. So we go through an endless ordeal with customer service (with, admittedly, a very nice woman) trying to get it set up. Which it turns out she can't do. The only way to do is to go back online and set it up ourselves. So I do so, typing onehanded (a first! really!) and get the order entered. She goes back into her system and bingo there's the order, so she sets out to get it activated for us.

And she can't. So she rummages around and bangs on the system and can't get it to work. So, off she goes to find a techie guy or a supervisor who can make it work. And after about ten minutes of hold music, she comes back on and tells us that it can't be done. Apparently, our package (which is admittedly a nice special) can not be altered. In ANY fashion. So we can't add the sports package.

This is the height of stupidity as far as I'm concerned. We have a special deal from TWC, not a huge savings, but a reduction from the regular price. In other words, they're making less from us than they could. And when we tried (OH how we tried), to let them make MORE money from us, they refused to give us the opporutnity to give them more money.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. These are the same idiots that merged Time-Warner with AOL and managed to lose money for EVERYBODY involved and is one of the few big business operations where senior management actually got fired for losing money, that's how egregious it was.

We're keeping TWC since we don't have any real choice (ATT U-Verse? PUHLEEZE!) But if we had a roof, that cable box would be out and a dish on said roof so fast there'd be windburn on the TWC people.

Good people at customer service but LOUSY customer service.

"In a way, I miss the months that followed Lehman’s failure. O.K., not really — but if it was a time of terror, it was also a time of clarity. The whole world was going to hell in a handbasket, and policy makers everywhere shared a common goal: stopping the plunge. "

Taxes and Their Miraculous Powers

Ezra sums it up perfectly: "I think the implication of the orthodox GOP take on taxes would be that the lower rates faced by the most productive members of society should have unlocked some dramatic economic benefits, but I think it’s very hard to detect those benefits in the economy’s performance over this period."
